Leisure time activities like art, music, drama, storytelling, and dance have been acknowledged increasingly as non-pharmacological treatment that improve psychological well-being, lower stress, and enhance social interaction among patients of dementia. The purpose of this study is to describe nurses’ perception on leisure activities and well-being among older adults with dementia care. The aim of this study is to describe the experiences of how leisure time activities are perceived, performed, and sustained in healthcare context by concentrating on the lived experiences and perspectives of nursing staff.
A Qualitative research method is used in this study. Data were collected through purposive sampling technique as the target group was nurses (n=6) who were dealing older adults with dementia. Semi structured questionnaire were published on Webropol. Nurses respond in Finnish and after collecting data, back translation into English was conducted and checked and reviewed multiple times to ensure the credibility and accuracy of responses.
The findings showed that nurses perceived leisure activities as non-pharmacological interventions for improving emotional, social, and cognitive well-being. The study yielded six main categories which are: Leisure time activities and well-being, nurses' experience of most engaging activities, Planning and implementation of activities, Communication between the clients during the activities, Helping factors for nurses to use more activities, Shared experiences highlighting the value of creative activities.
The outcomes showed that nurses regarded leisure time activities important for improving emotional, social, and cognitive wellbeing of older adults with dementia.
