End-of-life palliative care focuses on improving patients’ well-being at the end of their illness. Nurses have a vital role in enhancing patient well-being through a holistic care approach. This study aims to enhance nurses' knowledge of patient well-being in palliative care at the end of life to support holistic, person-centred care.
In this study, a systematic literature review was conducted to identify and analyse research on nursing roles and nursing interventions in palliative care. The contents include qualitative peer-reviewed articles that highlight how nurses contribute to patients’ comfort and dignity in the hospital palliative care setting.
The results identified two main themes: “Holistic patient care” and “Communication and patient advocacy”. Subthemes were identified within the main themes of physical care management (Pain management and symptom management), Emotional and psychological support, spiritual care, effective communication, and patient advocacy. Themes and subthemes are identified through meaning units from eight articles.
The study concludes that nurses play a vital and central role in promoting patient well-being by promoting holistic care, communication, and advocacy in palliative care. Hospital settings should always provide continuing education and a supportive environment that feels safe to the nurses so that nurses truly can provide patient-centred care and improve patient wellbeing.
