Tiivistelmä
The development of marketing has undergone significant transformation in the digital era, when attention has emerged as the most sought-after commodity. Conventional communication techniques presumed audiences could maintain prolonged concentration; however, the emergence of digital platforms, brief content, and incessant multitasking has disrupted consumer attention. This transition is especially evident among Generation Z, a group of digital natives who serve as both customers and active co-creators of brand narratives. Their significant purchasing power and cultural impact are countered by their restricted and unpredictable attention spans, posing distinct problems for marketers. This thesis analyses the effects of Generation Z's attention habits on brand communication. The research examines the destabilization of established consumer behaviour models, such as AIDA, in contexts characterized by ephemeral attention. It further examines how Gen Z's values-driven focus on authenticity, diversity, and sustainability combines with communication efficacy. The thesis, via a comprehensive literature study, finds tactics that allow companies to capture and maintain attention, such as short-form storytelling, influencer partnerships, user-generated content, and sustainability-focused messaging. The study enhances comprehension of how attention scarcity alters the principles of persuasion by integrating ideas from consumer behavior theory, generational marketing research, and the burgeoning science of neuromarketing. The findings underscore the necessity for adaptable, interactive, and value-aligned communication tactics to maintain relevance in the era of Generation Z.
