Tiivistelmä
Introduction Simulation-based education has established itself as a method in healthcare training where personnel can develop clinical skills and practise teamwork in a controlled environment without risk to actual patients. Simulation in situ takes place in the actual patient care environment where healthcare teams work, that allows them to use own equipment, protocols and communication systems. In situ simulation supports the assessment and improvement of organizational preparedness, promotes interdisciplinary communication, and fosters a culture of safety and continuous quality improvement.
Method A scoping review design. Data search was performed through three databases: PubMed, Google Scholar and CHINAL from February 2025 to September 2025. Nine articles met the inclusion criteria for the review. Three main themes were identified: Benefits of simulation in situ; challenges and barriers to implementation; how simulation in situ helps healthcare personnel cope with stressful circumstances. These were then analysed to further subcategories.
Results In situ simulation is a proactive quality improvement strategy. The identification of latent safety threats across multiple studies demonstrates that conducting simulations in actual clinical environments uncovers system vulnerabilities that remain hidden in simulation centres.
Studies revealed significant reduction in perceived stress related to critical events which support that in situ simulation builds psychological resilience.
Discussion Simulation must be viewed as an essential infrastructure for maintaining safe, high-quality care and supporting workforce well-being. In situ simulation offers a practical, evidence-based approach to prepare healthcare personnel for increasing complexity and demands for quality and safety. Persistent logistical challenges related to scheduling, resources, space, are not merely practical obstacles but reflect organizational priorities.
