Futures in cardiac rehabilitation: from knowledge to strategy

The objective of the thesis was to formulate scenarios to be used in strategic planning of cardiac rehabilitation and to study the usefulness of futures studies methods in strategic planning of rehabilitation.
A literature review and a questionnaire were used to gather background information on cardiac rehabilitation and its current situation in Finland. A total of 33 articles were selected for the literature review based on inclusion and exclusion criteria. Five major themes affecting the success of cardiac rehabilitation were identified from the literature review: access, adherence, gender and age, technology and digitalization, and professionals’ beliefs.
For the questionnaire, permits to run the questionnaire to employees working with cardiac patients were obtained. The questionnaire was administered anonymously to employees working with cardiac patients in four different wellbeing services counties to provide for a wider view on different cardiac rehabilitation programs. Four responses were obtained.
Finally, the futures studies method of scenario work was used to produce three different scenarios. The scenarios formed were business-as-usual, dystopia and utopia. PESTE analysis was used in forming the scenarios along with the themes identified in the literature review.
The purpose of the scenarios was to provide for a strategic tool for planning of organizational mission. The scenarios can be used in organizational planning since they offer possible outcomes of actions.
