Tiivistelmä
The study was conducted to investigate the development of cultural heritage tourism in Dhaka, with a focus on enhancing international appeal while ensuring the sustainable preservation of heritage sites. An inductive qualitative research approach was employed to explore the complexities of the tourism sector. Data was collected through semi-structured interviews with 15 randomly selected visitors—including architects, researchers, and tourism professionals. Thematic analysis was utilized to interpret the findings and identify recurring patterns related to infrastructure and site perception.
A high level of cultural pride was revealed among participants, alongside significant frustration regard-ing existing infrastructure. Primary motivations for site visitation were found to be architectural fasci-nation, educational pursuits, and a search for national identity. However, critical barriers to develop-ment were identified, specifically poor sanitation, limited accessibility, and inadequate site mainte-nance. While interactions with local artisans and guides were noted as positive elements that en-hanced the visitor experience, site management was found to lag behind international standards.
In order to make Dhaka a competitive global destination, a multi-pronged approach is needed, includ-ing improving infrastructure, engaging the community, and increasing digital marketing.
