Burnout has been found to be a major problem in the healthcare sector, and the implications of this issue on nurses working, particularly in the intensive care unit(ICU), are severe. Without proper planning and support, the demanding nature of the ICU may wear nurses out and make it more difficult for them to provide quality care to patients.
The objective of this review is to understand the factors that contribute to burnout in ICU nurses, such as excessive workloads, long working hours, mental strain, and staffing shortages. An inductive data analysis was done, and with that, these causative factors of burnout in ICU nurses were grouped into five themes: excessive workload, high patient acuity, professional autonomy, staffing levels, and mental health support.
Eight Peer-reviewed studies published within the last five years were used in this descriptive literature review to analyze existing knowledge of burnout and to understand how the previously mentioned factors fuel burnout in ICU nurses. These studies show that burnout is a threat to both ICU nurses and patient safety, highlighting the importance of institutional support measures.
