Tiivistelmä
The purpose of this thesis was to explore a potentially new approach for animation and create an experimental animation using the photogram technique. The objective was to produce animation frames via the photogram process, focused on a moving light source. The aim of this thesis was to explore how abstract photogram-based animation using found objects and soundscapes from specific locations, can create a sense of place.
The thesis includes discussion on experimental cameraless animation films, including the work of Man Ray and Stan Brakhage. It also includes theoretical background on photograms and experimental animation to understand the practices better.
The animation installation 'Abandoned Scapes' works as a case study in this thesis. Its theme explores the phenomenon of impermanence, inspired by urban exploration where this phenomenon is noticeable. The animation was created using photograms with broken glass as the main material and the field audio recordings used are from abandoned industrial locations.
