Tiivistelmä
Occupational safety remains a significant concern for organizations, as work-related accidents and unsafe practices affect both employee well-being and organizational performance. While legislation and formal safety systems provide a foundation for occupational safety, effective prevention also depends on employees’ everyday behaviour and willingness to report safety hazards. Safety hazard reporting enables organizations to identify and address risks before harm occurs. This research-based bachelor’s thesis focused on occupational safety in RTK-Palvelu Oy.
The objective of the thesis was to explore how RTK can strengthen employees’ commitment to occupational safety, with a particular focus on safety hazard reporting and everyday safety practices. The theoretical framework addressed organizational responsibilities, leadership and psychological safety, safety rule compliance and safety hazard reporting. The empirical part of the research was conducted using a quantitative survey distributed to employees working as train cleaners at Ilmala depot and Helsinki Central Railway Station. Data were collected through a Webropol questionnaire in October-November 2025, with 64 responses received. The data were analysed using descriptive statistical methods.
The results show that employees generally perceive occupational safety at RTK positively and consider it an important part of their daily work. Most employees feel able to report safety hazards, although differences exist between employee groups. The main barriers to reporting were unclear reporting procedures, assumptions that someone else would report the hazard and limited feedback after reporting. The findings indicate that clearer guidance, improved follow-up and stronger everyday safety communication can further strengthen employees’ commitment to occupational safety.
