Tiivistelmä
The construction industry has long faced challenges related to low productivity, cost overruns, fragmented collaboration, and increasing sustainability pressures despite its major contribution to the global economy. Rapid technological advancement and growing digitalization across industries have intensified the need for structural transformation in construction project management through the adoption of advanced digital technologies such as Building Information Modeling, artificial intelligence, cloud computing, and the Internet of Things.

The purpose of the study was to examine how digital transformation influences construction project management performance. The objectives were to identify key digital technologies applied in the sector, analyse their impact on operational and managerial performance, evaluate sustainability implications, and identify organisational barriers to successful digital adoption. Six research questions were formulated addressing operational efficiency, cost and schedule management, collaboration, safety, sustainability, and implementation challenges.

The research was conducted using a systematic literature review following PRISMA guidelines. Peer-reviewed academic articles and recognised industry reports published between 2015 and 2026 were systematically identified from major academic databases. The selected studies were screened according to predefined inclusion criteria, and the extracted data were analysed using qualitative thematic synthesis.

The results indicated that digital transformation improved operational productivity, enhanced cost forecasting and schedule monitoring, strengthened collaboration among stakeholders, supported proactive safety management, and facilitated sustainability through lifecycle-based data analysis. However, implementation was found to be influenced by organisational readiness, digital skill availability, leadership commitment, and technological infrastructure.

It was concluded that digital transformation represents a systemic organisational evolution rather than merely a technological upgrade. Successful implementation requires the alignment of digital technologies, managerial capabilities, and workforce competencies in order to achieve sustainable improvements in construction project performance.
