Tiivistelmä
The construction sector accounts for a significant share of resource consumption and environmental impact in Europe, while large amounts of building materials are demolished despite having remaining technical service life. The reuse of precast concrete elements has therefore been identified as an important strategy for reducing the environmental impact of the construction industry.
The aim of this thesis was to investigate how industrial halls can be designed to enable the future reuse of precast concrete elements, with particular focus on structural connection solutions. The study was conducted as a literature review, in which scientific articles, reports, and industry publications were analysed.
The results show that the reuse of precast concrete elements in industrial halls is technically feasible, but largely dependent on how the structure is designed at an early stage. Connection solutions are of critical importance, where mechanical and reversible connections enable disassembly without damaging the elements, while cast-in-place and permanent joints hinder reuse. Furthermore, standardisation, simplicity in structural design, and the availability of detailed documentation are identified as key factors for enabling reuse. At the same time, practical challenges are identified, such as the risk of damage during disassembly and difficulties in adapting elements to new structures.
In conclusion, the study demonstrates that the reuse of precast concrete elements has a significant potential to contribute to more sustainable construction but requires that reuse is considered already in the planning process.
