Tiivistelmä
Alcohol abuse is a worldwide phenomenon which is widespread and the most prevalent mental health-related problem in nearly all parts of the world. Examining the nursing interventions and the associated barriers in the treatment and management of clients with alcohol use disorder (AUD) is important in combating the spread of addiction and supporting the recovery of clients from alcohol addiction. This study was designed to identify the nursing interventions in the treatment of alcohol-addicted clients and the challenges that impede the full implementation and effectiveness of treatment. This study was done through a qualitative systematic review. Relevant literatures were selected from five electronic databases published between the years 2014 and 2023. The Prochaska model of change was adopted as the theoretical framework in this study. Fourteen (14) articles were subjected to thematic content analysis. The result revealed that psychosocial intervention, psycho-education and the provision of holistic care to meet the physical, social and spiritual needs of the clients are important in the management of clients. The identified barriers to the effectiveness of these interventions include negative attitudes and education of carers, difficulties in accessing treatment, freedom and opportunities and patient-related problems. Findings from this current study are important for health care workers to understand the management of patients and to develop interventions to ensure the proper and total recovery of clients with alcohol disorders.
