Tiivistelmä
This thesis investigates the mental well-being of deck crew members operating on Ro-Pax vessels, a sector characterized by high-frequency port calls and intense operational pressure. Using a mixed-methods approach, the study collected quantitative data from 40 active seafarers and qualitative insights from semi-structured interviews with five deck personnel. The research identifies "Schedule and working hours" (47.5%) as the primary occupational stressor, followed by isolation from family and poor internet connectivity. Notably, the study reveals a significant "silent crisis," with 30% of respondents reporting experiences or observations of bullying. Findings suggest that while salary remains a top motivator, it cannot compensate for the physical and psychological toll of chronic fatigue. The thesis concludes with practical recommendations for shipping companies, including the implementation of "Digital Lifelines" (high-speed internet), shorter contract rotations, and the introduction of onboard mental health designated support person. By shifting from a purely technical safety culture to a culture of care, the maritime industry can improve both crew retention and operational safety.
