Motivation and motivated employees is the key to a successful company. To reach as good results as possible the employees need to be motivated, feel that they are and that their performances are appreciated and that their efforts are profitable. Rewarding is a positive form of attention and confirmation the company can use to motivate its employees. The reason for the thesis is to find out whether the receptionists at the hotel chain X in Helsinki are motivated, try to reach for good performances, if they find that the way of rewarding in the company and at their workplace is enough to motivate them. Also what according to themselves motivates them the most and what things could be done differently in the company. Maslow’s, Herzberg’s, Vroom’s and McClelland’s motivational theories are presented in hopes of describing what motivation is. Also theories about work motivation, rewards and leadership are presented. To receive an as honest and realistic result as possible the receptionists from the different hotels in Helsinki will participate in an online survey which is completely anonymous. The result from the survey will later be presented and discussed in the thesis with help of different diagrams and figures to make it as easy and understandable as possible for the reader. In the result and in the discussion it is very obvious that many of the results agree with the theories but that there always are some exceptions. All in all the receptionists do feel happy and comfortable at their workplace but unfortunately very many of them have a lack of motivation that the company has not yet found a good way to cure with help of immaterial and material rewards that would make up for the lack of inner, long-term motivational factors. In the different hotels, mate-rial rewards such as gift cards are used, but it’s the immaterial rewards such as feedback and opportunities to grow and develop that are more appreciated. In hopes to motivate the employees, a better and more efficient reward system should be put to use which would compensate the lack of challenges within to work itself. Opportunities for education were highly regarded and would help the employees to challenge themselves and stimulate their needs for personal growth and development.
