Tiivistelmä
In this thesis, an attempt was made to highlight the potential of biogas as a substitute of traditional and commercial fuel mostly used for cooking and water heating in Arba village in the hills of Pokhara, Gandaki, Nepal. In addition, the aim was to indicate the reduction in the use of firewood and GHG emissions. The thesis also aimed at showing the changes biogas plant effected in the daily life of local people in the village.

The primary data for the research was obtained by household questionnaires among 41 houses in ward 1 and ward 3 of Arba village. The survey was conducted for 10 days where the questions were mostly based upon the current situation of their biogas plant and their satisfaction. The secondary data were obtained from previous research papers, various publications on biogas and interview with biogas experts.

Most of the households had a well running plant and the family were entirely dependent upon the biogas for cooking food and heating water. The substrate for the biogas plant were the dung from the animals they had and connection from a toilet. However, all the households had no connection of toilet into the plant. The household that had a toilet connection in the plant had very good production of biogas and had no complains about malfunctioning of the plant whereas the household dependent on the dung had complains of less production of gas. None of the households had ever done a renovation of their plants from the date of installation, the oldest biogas plant in the study was of 15 years old.
