This thesis was a quantitative study for the commissioner. The study was conducted as a case study, which focused on the players and the parents of a local junior ice hockey team for 12- to 13-year-olds. The purpose of the study was to understand and to examine the effects of the underlying phenomenon of ability grouping. The goal was to investigate how ability grouping affects junior ice hockey players' intrinsic motivation and their sense of relatedness in the team.
The study was conducted as an online questionnaire. The questionnaire form was sent to the players’ parents via email. First, the players of the team answered questions directed at them, after which the parents had a chance to answer questions of their own. The questionnaire forms were sent during the summer of 2019.
The results of the study were interesting and differed from the original hypotheses. The single most important result of the study revealed that ability grouping did not have major effects on the group’s social cohesion. Even though the sense of relatedness was strong amongst the players, it hardly correlated with the individual’s and the team’s task cohesion. In other words, the players’ strong relatedness in the team failed to manifest in practice. The results thus indicate that ability grouping may have a negative effect on junior ice hockey players’ task cohesion.
This case study gives directional results but since it is based on the experiences and opinions of only one group, the results of this study cannot be generalized. This study can be replicated in different environments, but the results may vary.
