During the past years e-commerce has grown exponentially throughout the world including Finland. Therefore it is estimated that, with such speed, e-commerce may be a synonym for all business and commerce in the future. Even though e-commerce is often considered as an environmentally friendly process, a closer look reveals that it is not necessarily the case. Growth in e-commerce and online shopping may lead to a significant load on the environment due to logistics and growth in air cargo, for example.
The purpose of this thesis was, first of all, to find out what sectors and functions e-commerce consists of and also to identify what kind of pressures the constantly increasing online shopping and its by-products have on the environment and why. In the theoretical part of the thesis the purpose was also to go through the history of
e-commerce and the reasons for the rapid growth of online shopping in order to understand its popularity today.
The study was conducted as a survey among the Facebook site followers of Kuopion Luonnon Ystäväin Yhdistys ry and Partioaitta 365 -loyalty club. The purpose of the survey was to find out the online shopping behavior of the focus group, which was nature and hiking enthusiasts. They are considered more environmentally aware and more concerned about the nature than consumers on average. The aim of the survey was also to discover if the focus group was more aware of the environmental impacts that e-commerce and online shopping together with online logistics have. Would the focus group, the nature and hiking enthusiasts, be more ready to compensate the environmental burden caused by their online shopping and if so, how?
The study showed that the main reason for online shopping was not price based but the range of products together with time saving. Even though the survey respondents, the nature and hiking enthusiasts, are rather environmentally friendly with an environmentally responsible behavior and would be ready for compensate the environmental burden caused by a faster delivery as higher delivery charges, they would not approve if the free product return became a fee-based service. Practically this means that - in the end - the freedom of consumer choice is concerned more important than the environmental load caused by this behavior. There are also indications suggesting that the age, the place of residence, the amount of euros spent on each purchase and the frequency of online shopping could make a difference on the willingness to affect the environmental impact of e-commerce.
