The purpose of my thesis was to design a forest bathing product for Finnish travelers in the Puijo outdoor recreation area. The client organisation for the thesis was the Outdoors Northern Savo project. Nature tourism and wellness tourism have become important trends in the tourism industry. As there is a clear demand for nature derived experiences, an important factor influencing this thesis was the need for the development of nature-based activities.
The thesis is comprised of a theory section and a section focused on product development in practice. The theoretical framework of the thesis is comprised of nature tourism, domestic tourism, the effects of nature on human well-being as well as product development and experience design. The product development process model of tourism companies by Komppula and Boxberg (2002) has been used as the basis of the product development.
As a result of the product development process a forest bathing product was created, the design of which was steered by the concept of shinrin-yoku, a traditional form of Japanese forest bathing. In the activity the customer will participate in a group-based forest bathing session instructed by the guide. During the activity the customer will perform multiple exercises the aim of which is to help the customer be immersed in the nature experience.
During the product development process in this thesis a product blueprint was also created, which could be utilized by a company looking to implement the product. The testing and commercial launch of the product were left outside of the scope of this thesis.
