”SE RIITTI, ETTÄ ON MUITA NUORIA ÄITEJÄ” : Nuorten äitien kokemuksia Näpin merkityksestä arjessa

Tutkimuksen tehtävänä oli selvittää nuorten äitien tarpeita ja sitä kuinka Kajaanissa sijaitsevan nuorten äitien perhekahvila Näpin toiminta vastaa äitien tarpeisiin. Selvitimme miksi äidit valitsivat Näpin muiden perhekahviloiden sijasta ja haimme kehitysehdotuksia Näpin toiminnan parantamiseksi. Tutkimuksemme pohjautui sosiaaliseen tukeen, vertaistukeen ja Maslow’n (1943) tarvehierarkiaan, joiden pohjalta tulkitsimme äitien tarpeita.

Toteutimme tutkimuksen kvalitatiivisena eli laadullisena tutkimuksena. Aineiston keräsimme huhtikuussa 2010 teemahaastatteluina, joihin osallistui seitsemän 21–25-vuotiasta Näpissä käyvää äitiä.

Sisällönanalyysivaiheessa huomasimme selkeän kahtiajaon äitien tukiverkostoissa. Osa äideistä koki tukiverkostonsa hyväksi ja osa heikoksi. Äitien kokemukset tarpeista ja Näpin merkityksestä erosivat sen perusteella kumpaan ryhmään he kuuluivat. Tutkimuksen tulosten mukaan tukiverkostonsa hyväksi kokeneet äidit kokivat Näpin tukevan sosiaalisia kontakteja ja hyvinvointia. Tukiverkostonsa heikoksi kokeneet äidit hakivat vahvistusta Näpistä arjessa jaksamiseen.

Suurin osa Näpissä käyneistä äideistä ei käynyt muissa perhekahviloissa kuin Näpissä. Äidit olivat kokeneet muiden perhekahviloiden aukioloajat huonoiksi, sekä keskustelun hankalaksi vanhempien äitien kanssa. Äidit olivat pääosin tyytyväisiä Näpin toimintaan. Kehitysehdotuksina toivottiin sitoutunutta vetäjää, aukioloajan muutosta ja Näpin toivottiin olevan auki myös kesäisin.

Pohdimme, että hyvä opinnäytetyön aihe tutkimuksemme jatkoksi voisi olla toimintakansion tekeminen Näppiin. Tämä helpottaisi ohjaajan tehtävää ja voisi innostaa muitakin äitejä toimimaan vetäjänä. Mietimme myös, että voisi olla hyvä idea hankkia Näppiin ohjaajia Kajaanin Ammattikorkeakoulun tai Yliopiston opiskelijoista.

Abstract

The aim of this thesis was to find out young mothers’ needs and how Kajaani’s young mothers family café Näppi and its activities meet mothers’ needs. We studied why mothers choose Näppi cafe instead of other family cafés, and we wished to get development proposals to improve Näppi’s activities. Our thesis was based on social support, peer support and Maslow’s (1943) hierarchy of needs. On the basis of those concepts we interpreted mothers’ needs.

This study was qualitative. We collected material in April 2010 by theme interviews. Seven mothers aged 21–25, who were regular visitors of Näppi café, participated in the research.

In the content analysis phase we noticed clear separation in the mothers’ support networks. A part of mothers considered their support networks good, and a part of mothers regarded their support networks weak. The mothers’ views on their needs and the meaning of Näppi café in their lives differed from one another depending on which group they belong. According to this study those mothers who experienced their support network good thought that Näppi cafe supports their social contacts and wellbeing. Those mothers who experienced their support network weak came to Näppi cafe to get strength to cope with the everyday life.

Most of the mothers who visited Näppi cafe did not visit other family cafes. Those mothers did not find the opening hours of those cafés suitable for them and they considered it difficult to discuss with older mothers. The mothers were mainly satisfied with Näppi cafe’s activities. As development suggestions the mothers wished for a committed leader, a change in opening hours and summertime opening hours.

We think that a good further research topic to our survey could be doing an activity folder to Näppi cafe. This would help the leader’s task and encourage other mothers to work as leaders. We also think that it would be good idea to get leaders to Näppi cafe from the students of Kajaani University of Applied Sciences or other university students.
