Vastuu ja valta : dokumenttiohjaajan työnkuva pienryhmässä

Abstract

Opinnäytetyöni on monimuototyö ja se koostuu kahdesta osasta: toinen on tämä kirjallinen työ ja toinen on puolen tunnin mittainen dokumenttielokuva Sirkan miehet. Elokuva kertoo lappilaisesta yrittäjäsuvusta, joka omistaa kaupan Sirkan kylässä. Kirjallisessa työssäni perehdyn dokumenttiohjaajan työnkuvaan. Selvitän, mitä kaikkea ohjaajan työhön kuuluu, kun se tehdään pienellä joukolla. Käsittelen ohjaajan työskentelemistä kuvaajan, leikkaajan ja päähenkilöiden kanssa. Käyn läpi myös vastuita, joita ohjaajalla on suhteessa heihin. Hahmottelen, mitkä kaikki asiat, jotka ovat ohjaajan vastuulla, vaikuttavat tuntuvasti dokumentin lopputulokseen. Erittelen yksityiskohtaisesti ohjaajan vastuita ja tarjoan ratkaisumalleja tuleville ohjaajille ja dokumentaristeille. Kirjallisessa työssä en paneudu lainkaan dokumentinteon teknisiin seikkoihin, vaan käsittelen pelkästään työnkuvia ja vastuita. Työssäni esittelen lähteideni kautta dokumenttiohjaajan työnkuvaa sekä peilaan ja reflektoin teoriaa omiin kokemuksiini, joita keräsin Sirkan miehet -elokuvaa tehdessä. Opinnäytetyössäni selvisi, että dokumenttiohjaajan työ on ennen kaikkea sosiaalisia suhteita ja ongelmanratkaisutaitoja - tasapainottelua työryhmän ja oman näkemyksen välillä.

My thesis consists of two parts. The first one is a documentary film Sirkan Miehet, which is a 30 minute film about an entrepreneur family who is running a grocery store in the village of Sirkka, beneath the massive ski center Levi. The second part consist of the written section, Responsibility and Power; The Role of a Documentary Director. In the written section I concentrate on the work of a documentary film director: what kind of a burden is the director carrying during the film making when working with a relatively small crew. What kind of different tasks the director needs to carry out in addition to his own directing. What all the aspects of his work are. I also take a closer look at the relationships between a director and the cameraman, editor and the main characters. Moreover the following question is posed: what are the most difficult challenges that the director faces with the crew and cast during a documentary film making In the present work I have offered guidelines about the director-cameraman relationship for the future directors and filmmakers. I’ve concentrated purely on the social side of director’s work and left out all the technical aspects of a documentary film making. The research results indicated that the director’s work is mostly problem solving between him and the crew and also between the main characters. Most of all it is balancing between the vision that the director has and the reality that comes with the crew and the characters. Directing is an art where you have to be confident about yourself and your own vision but also handle it with extreme softness and care.
