Sex handledare deltog i diskussionstillfället.
The aim of this thesis was to find out how supervisors experience the counselling relationship in the unit for children and adolescents in the Oravainen Refugee Center. A literature review reveals that the counselling relationship exposes the supervisor to secondary traumatization. The aim of this thesis was to find out what a counselling relationship is, how the counselling relationship affects the supervisors and how the counselling relationship could be developed.
The study includes both a theoretical and an empirical part. The following concepts were dealt with in the theoretical part; refugee supervisor, unaccompanied minor asylum seeker, primary and secondary traumatization, compassion fatigue and the counselling relationship. The empirical material was collected with a questionnaire and there was also an opportunity for the supervisors to discuss. The questionnaire was responded by 23 supervisors and 6 supervisors took part in the discussion. The aim was to find out the supervisors´ perspective of the counseling relationship. The data was analyzed by using qualitative content analysis method.
According to the supervisors, the following components are needed to build up a counselling relationship: trust, respect, time, communication, professionalism and empathy. A counselling relationship consists of helping, being an adult, sticking to the rules, being present in the everyday life, teaching and speaking with the unaccompanied minor asylum seeker. The unaccompanied minor asylum seeker is often primary traumatized. In this research 61% of the supervisors showed symptoms of the secondary traumatization. According to this limited research the female supervisors and supervisors who have been in the field less than two years were more vulnerable to STS. The emotional symptoms were feelings of powerlessness, anxiety, guilt, sadness, anger and frustration. The work performance symptoms were staff conflicts, avoiding tasks and having feelings of incompetence. There were also gastric problems and sleep disturbance. The supervisors wanted to develop the counseling relationship by supervision, by training, by getting more information and knowledge and getting more time with the unaccompanied minor asylum seeker and fellow workers.
