Ruokohelpisilpun pölyävyyttä tulisi pystyä alentamaan, kannattaisi esimerkiksi selvittää, millainen merkitys partikkelikoolla on pölyävyyteen. Naudoilla ilmeni jonkin verran ruokohelpisilpun syömistä. Tätä voitaisiin estää esimerkiksi kuituhampun tai oljen yhdistämisellä ruokohelpikuivikkeeseen. The purpose of bedding is primarily to soften the animal's sleeping site, insulate it from the cold and to prevent abrasions. The material used as bedding requires capacity to bind moisture and ammonium nitrogen. The bedding used must be free of pathogens and easy to spread. Mechanical applying of bedding material by machines should be possible, for example in barns.
The thesis was commissioned by Vähähiilinen maatila project (Low Carbon Farm) of the School of Engineering and Natural Resources of Oulu University of Applied Sciences. The aim of the thesis was to look into the suitability of reed canary grass as bedding for cattle and rabbits. The bedding experiments were performed on the college farm of the OSAO Muhos unit. The bedding material test compared the functionality of cutter chips and reed canary grass chaff as bedding for cattle and the suitability of reed canary grass pellets for rabbit litter.
Reed canary grass chaff and pellets proved to be good bedding for cattle and litter for rabbits. The absorbency and odor scavenging of reed canary grass chaff and pellets was clearly better than that of the cutter chips. Also when evaluating the softness of bedding material, reed canary grass chaff was better than cutter chips. The only downside was the dustiness of the reed canary grass chaff. Due to their weight, reed canary grass pellets were felt to be more laborious than light cutter chips, especially when changing bedding.
When reed canary grass pellets were used as litter for rabbits, the amount of pellets could be reduced compared to the amount of litter typically used in this work. Replacement interval of litter could be extended, as there were still absorbent pellets left in the litter containers after three weeks. The amount of pellet reduction or extension of the replacement interval would be reflected in reduced bedding costs.
It should be possible to reduce the dustiness of reed canary grass chaff. It would be worthwhile to find out what role particle size has in dustiness. Cattle was observed to eat some reed chaff. This could be prevented, for example, by combining hemp or straw with reed canary grass litter.
