Tiivistelmä
Lasten toiminnanohjausta arvioiville arviointimenetelmille on kysyntää suomalaisessa toimintaterapiassa. Tämän vuoksi menetelmiä on tarve suomentaa, jotta niitä saataisiin käyttöön myös suomenkielisenä. Pelkkä menetelmän kääntäminen kohdekielelle ei kuitenkaan riitä, vaan käännösprosessi vaatii kokonaisuudessaan useamman eri vaiheen, jotta menetelmä saadaan lopulta virallistettua suomalaiseen toimintaterapiakäytäntöön. The Children’s Kitchen Task Assessment (CKTA) on strukturoitu toiminnallinen havainnointimenetelmä arviointiin, jolla arvioidaan 8-12-vuotiaan lapsen toiminnanohjausta ja selvitetään, millaista ohjaamista lapsen osallistuminen merkityksellisiin toimintoihin edellyttää.
There is a demand for assessment methods which measure children’s executive function skills in Finnish occupational therapy. Therefore, there is a need for translating the methods into Finnish so that they can also be used in Finnish language. However, simply translating the method into the target language is not enough because the whole translation process requires several different phases to finally formalize the method through validation in Finnish occupational therapy practice. The Children’s Kitchen Task Assessment (CKTA) is a structured functional assessment method which evaluates the executive function skills of children, aged from 8 to 12 years old, and sorts out the type of guidance the child needs to participate in meaningful activities. The first Finnish translation of the CKTA was completed in autumn 2018 at Oulu University of Applied Sciences.
The first short-term aim of this thesis was to review and elaborate the Finnish translation through improving the quality criteria which were comprehensibility, consistency, and cultural adaptability. The second short-term aim was to plan and implement two focus group discussions where in two groups of experts were discussed the development proposals for the review of the Finnish translation of the CKTA. In addition to us, the expert groups consisted of two our thesis guiding teachers and three occupational therapists in pediatric setting. To improve the quality criteria, as the elaborating we did changes to the translation based on the feedback from the discussions. The development aim of this project was that The Finnish version of the CKTA would be officially available in the future after having completed the entire translation process. Occupational therapists will benefit the publication of the Finnish translation of the CKTA in that way it would increase the quality of their work because the method enables structured evaluation of the need for support of child’s executive function skills. Thus, the family and other social contacts of child would get valuable information of the guidance techniques which can be useful for the child in his natural environments.
The background theory of the thesis is centered around child’s executive function skills and, using occupation-based evaluation, the identification of its need for guidance. The aims of our project were met well, and the quality criteria were achieved in consequence of especially thorough review and elaborating of the translation. The product of our project is the reviewed and elaborated the Finnish translation version of the CKTA. In future, the translation process of the Finnish version of the CKTA can advance to the next phases.
