The aim of this final year project was to present soil compaction in practise as well as benefits of machine control system for soil compaction work. The aim was to bring out what information about soil compaction can be obtained using a machine control system. Today 3D-machine control systems are an essential part of construction, especially in road construction.
The project was carried out VT5 Juva – Nuutilanmäki site and Trimble 3D machine control system was used in a roller compactor owned by Maanrakennus V.Inola Oy. With the equipment it was monitored what kind of information the system provided and what were the benefits from the information. The material used in this thesis was gathered from internet sources and by interviewing the staff of the companies Avesco Oy and Sitech Finland.
As a result of this project, the benefits of the machine control system were brought up as well as the things that need to be developed to make the system more reliable. Thanks to the machine control system, the soil compaction work can be documented for the entire area, where soil compaction is done. The machine cont-rol system tells about the tightness and sag of the layer to be compacted and calculates the overrun times while driving. Now although the system does not take into account the other machines driving in the area and the tightness caused by them remains unmeasured, there is still room for improvement.
