The Oulu Optometria Forum was a two-day event that offered in-service training for practicing opticians and optometrists. Our main goal was to organize a beneficial and topical event, the purpose of which was to educate the working professionals of the field. We also aimed to familiarize ourselves with event organization as well as gain more in-depth knowledge about the chosen lecture topics. The event was in part organized by a group of optometry students and serves as their final thesis work. This two-day training event combined the traditional in-service training day held in Oulu, the 50th anniversary education day of the Finnish Contact Lens Association as well as the annual EAOO conference typically held in Helsinki. The event offered lectures in both Finnish and English and was worth nine additional training points, which is nearly a third of the required amount that practicing professionals must achieve within a five-year span.
The event took place at the Radisson Blu Hotel Oulu conference hall, where lunch was served on both days with coffee breaks held in the morning as well as the afternoon. During breaks it was possible to familiarize oneself with exhibitors who had purchased a table for presenting their products.
Organizing the event were the aforementioned four optometry students of the Oulu University of Applied Sciences, two optometry students of the Metropolia School of Applied Sciences as well as the Finnish Contact Lens Association. An online streaming service was provided by the Finnish Association of Vision and Eyecare NÄE ry which made participation via internet possible. The stream was available for a month post-event.
The success of the event was evaluated through a feedback questionnaire. In this final thesis work the organizing students were able to network with professionals of the field and received valuable experience in event organization, marketing, budgeting and project management.
