Tiivistelmä
Opinnäytetyön aiheena on tutkia Helsingin pörssin arvo-osakkeiden tuottoa 2010-luvulla.
Yritysten tunnusluvut saimme yritysten vuosikertomuksista.
The topic of the thesis is to study the return of value stocks in the Helsinki Stock Exchange in the 2010s. The study examines whether it has been possible to make an excess return in the 2010s by investing in the best companies based on their key figures alone. In history, many studies has shown that value stocks selected based on their key figures have outperformed the index in the
long run and the thesis finds out if this has continued.
The thesis talks about the choice of investment strategy, key figures for the value investor, value investment as a concept and its differences with quality and growth investment. The thesis also discusses about issues affecting stock prices, such as market psychology. The sources of the knowledge base are internet sources and investment books.
The study covers the period between 4th January 2010 and 30th December 2019. During this period, there were a total of 90 companies on the Helsinki Stock Exchange, and the best 20 from them were selected based on different key figures. The P/E ratio, the P/B ratio, their income, the Graham ratio, and the dividend yield percentage. The returns of the selected companies were
compared to the average returns of all shares and to the OMXHGI index. The company key figures were obtained from the companies' annual reports. The market prices were taken from the price history of Kauppalehti (a Finnish financial magazine) and dividends from Ilta-Sanomat (a Finnish evening paper) dividend calendar.
According to the findings, a low P/B ratio or a high dividend yield alone are not sufficient tools for choosing stocks. In addition, considering the P/E ratio can ensure that the company makes a profit.
The top 20 stocks selected based on the P/E ratio alone yielded the returns of 151.22% during the review period. By multiplying the P/E and P/B figures, i.e. the Graham figure, the selected stocks yielded the returns of 168.44%. During the same period, the average return on all listed stocks under review was 121.74%. The OMXHGI index yielded the returns of 130.64%. It can be stated that, based on the P/E ratio alone and the Graham ratio alone, investing has resulted in a better than average return on the Helsinki Stock Exchange even in the 2010s. Even so, in line with this study and history, investing based on key figures may have resulted in an excess return, however,
this is still not guaranteed in the future, as no one can predict the future of the stock market.
