Tiivistelmä
Background:
Due to the start of the Covid-19 pandemic, there are a lot of restrictions and social changes arising. These changes are challenging for every individual, but especially for young people going through pubertal changes. Social contacts and support are very important during this development, which is why it is of upmost importance to research the effects of the reduced social life of the adolescents.
Objective:
The aim of this thesis is to identify the indirect effects of the Covid-19 pandemic on the well-being of the adolescents in Lower Saxony and how they adapt to the new circumstances. The results of this thesis can be used for further research and to get a basic understanding of the situation of the adolescents’ well-being with limited social life.
Methodology:
An extensive literature review regarding the social and psychological development and well-being of adolescents, as well as of the Covid-19 restrictions in Lower Saxony, took place. A questionnaire for adolescents aged 13 to 15 years was designed for Lower Saxony, Germany. In total, three schools took part in the research and 86 students answered the questionnaire. The data collection was done anonymously and the analysis was done with the help of the data analysis software "SPSS".
Results:
The results of the research clearly show that the pandemic, especially the social restrictions, have a great impact on the adolescents. The students mentioned that the most notable changes because of the pandemic are the school environment, the social contacts, and the usage of digital devices. It is also visible that the students al-ready find their own way of adapting to the new situation (e.g. by spending more time in nature and communicating with their friends online).
Conclusion
The results show the necessity to pay attention to the adolescents’ well-being during these challenging times. The overall high willingness to participate in the research and the positive feedback, showed that the students would be open for social support and preventative interventions. This research could be used to get a basic under-standing of the adolescents’ mental state, for developing these supportive interventions.
