Abstract
The purpose of this thesis was to design a more automatic and cost-efficient method to produce brick ties for Lankarakenne Oy. A simple wire feeding machine with straightening and cutting feature would serve as such a solution. The designed wire feeding machine would be part of a new manufacturing complex in the production of brick ties and completely replace the use and filling of the part magazine. In this new more automatic method, the steel wire would automatically proceed through the straightening process and attach to a robot before the latter part of the wire feeding machine would cut the wire. The robot would then carry the brick tie component into the eccentric press which would flatten and puncture the other end of the piece. Next the machine would move the component forward for further processing and get a grip of the steel wire moving through the machine before it is cut again.
In the thesis, a 3D-modeling of the wire feeding machine was designed. The model was based on a theory of the usability and functionality of robotics and technology gathered from online and written sources. Material found on the Internet has been critically reviewed from other reliable sources. The online sources mainly consist of research as well as brochures and websites of the component producers and can thus be considered reliable. By using the SolidWorks software, the 3D-modeling aims for realistic and simplified portrayal of the wire feeding machine.
If Lankarakenne Oy plans on including the wire feeding machine as part of their brick tie manufacturing process, the results of this study can be useful in the transitional stage. The wire feeding machine increases the automatization of production and therefore reduces the required labor workload and costs in the long term. There is room for further development and modifications to possibly improve the brick tie manufacturing even more with the help of the wire feeding machine. The design can serve as a basis for future development work in the client organization.
