Cloud is rapidly becoming the primary data storage for businesses; most businesses have even moved their applications to the cloud with no infrastructure on-premises. Many of those who have their data on-premises today are planning to migrate to cloud and evaluating the cloud alternatives. This is due to that the price-performance of the cloud-based service hosting has dramatically improved while the on-premises hosting remained relatively static. finding it more beneficial in terms of cost, high availability, and easy maintenance. The main reason being difficulties in scaling up/out the on-premises infrastructure, maintenance overhead and required skillsets. Additionally, the cloud providers offer useful features, which in case of on-premises would have been difficult to implement.
The case company of this thesis is a multi-national enterprise consulting company and implementation partner for an Enterprise Software Product company "Infor". As an implementation partner, the case company need to maintain the development snapshots of the application landscape for each customer. The case company also owns and maintains the source codes of the customized Enterprise resource planning (ERP) components and the compiled objects are deployed in the customer environments. These environments are maintained in the form of virtual machines hosted on the Hyper V server. Being in its growth phase the case company must maintain growing number of customers development environments on its on-premises infrastructure.
The major problems the case company faces are the technicalities involved in scaling the on-premises infrastructure including the time and cost. Also, maintenance of these environment is an additional overhead and requires skilled resources.
Migrating the on-premises applications to the public cloud is recommended, as the case company will be able to focus on its core business. The scaling of the infrastructure and the maintenance responsibilities are transferred to the cloud service provider and the pay per use model will automatically optimize the costs involved in regards of the cloud hardware.
The thesis found AWS as the most suited cloud platform due to its flexibility, maturity in this space, availability of additional features and tools making it feasible to develop a better migration strategy compatible with different operating systems and programming languages unlike its peers. AWS turns out to be more cost effective based on the study in this thesis for the case company and offers plenty of documentation for learning the environment.
