The elderly population in Cameroon, like any other country, is increasing. Most of them are living in rural communities and lack the means to take care of their basic needs, leaving them to depend solely on their family caregivers who are also struggling to cater for their own needs and that of their elderly relatives.
Hence, the purpose of this study was to explore the needs of the elderly and their family care-givers in Tubah subdivision, Northwest region of Cameroon. The questions that this study aimed to answer are: 1, What are the needs of the elderly in Tubah subdivision? 2. What kind of support do family caregivers need with caring for their relatives? A qualitative study design was used to explore this topic. Data was collected using semi-structured interviews. 20 elderly and their caregivers participated in the study. Inductive content analysis was utilised to identify themes.
The findings revealed the following themes for the elderly: the need for resources, healthcare, social services, and justice. For their caregivers, need for health care services, financial assistance, training on elderly care, respite care, a support group for family caregivers, supplies, and subsidized services.
Based on the result, it is evident that the elderly and their family caregivers are in desperate need of support. Hence, the goal of the study was to gain an understanding of these needs to start up a non-profit organisation for them in future.
