Temporary works and formwork management, in particular, are essential elements of the cast-in-place construction value chain that has not focused much on scientific literature. Despite the numerous proven evidence of BIM benefits among various AEC industry stakeholders through different project phases, formwork tasks are still carried on with outdated methods along building stages. This study sheds light on these traditional formwork management methods and studies the impact of BIM-based workflow on the process. The best practices available for digitizing the CIP molds modeling, which software vendors provide this service, and the challenges facing this approach are among the objectives of this research.
The research commenced by exploring the literature of CIP from an overarching point of view and continued with formworks and BIM in a more in-depth view. Formwork types and systems were explored, and an overview of what molds activities the building project would include has been stated. Formworks' importance and challenges followed in the research. The research hypothesis was then introduced, stating that including BIM-based formwork models would benefit various project stakeholders. BIM interoperability and levels had to be discussed to build understanding for different BIM levels. Then the hypothesis was evaluated through qualitative interviews with industry professionals and followed by intrinsic industry examples of formwork modeling in BIM.
