The objective of this thesis was to gain comprehensive understanding of the financing process of MSMEs in the Kuopio region. The goal was to analyze the experiences of the local MSMEs together with relevant theories from literature to define how the financing processes of the interviewed companies work and how the processes could possibly be improved.
Information applied in this thesis was obtained mainly from books and interviews, but also internet sources such as articles, blogs and websites were utilized. This thesis focuses on MSMEs because they are often considered to be more fragile than large corporations, and MSMEs are crucial for the economy. The thesis introduces general theories and figures on financing an enterprise, after which possible sources of financing are discussed in Chapter 3. Chapter 4 focuses on the process of financing with the knowledge gained from researching literature. Chapter 5 introduces the research methodology of the thesis, after which the research results and discrepancies between the theories and interviewees’ experiences are discussed in Chapter 6. Chapter 7 presents the conclusion and the author’s opinions based on the information gathered.
As a conclusion, the theories and their usefulness for the interviewed companies were evaluated. The author expresses a wish that the interviewed companies find some of the information provided in this thesis useful for their financing processes in the future. In addition, new entrepreneurs desiring to establish a company could benefit from the experiences of the interviewees, as well as the theories discussed in this thesis. It would be possible to take this thesis further by interviewing more companies and making more thorough calculations based on the figures and data of their operations.
