Company Oy Syketec Ab was established during the fall of 2011 and is active in the bioenergy sector. Its main product is the thinning harvester JOBO ST-75 which is offered in two different customer configurations. To be able to put sustainable prices on its products detailed cost data and reliable calculations are required. The aim of my thesis is to highlight different methods for product cost calculation and to show how the results can be analyzed in a broader context. Furthermore, the results should be able to give indication on which type of product package would be more profitable in the long term.
The first chapter of the theoretical part deals with the subject of management accounting from a general perspective. Here the reader is introduced to the subject and fundamental terms and concepts within the area of management accounting are presented. The second chapter of the theory covers the area of product cost calculation. A detailed account of different calculation methods, their contexture and fields of application are given. The empirical part consists of a case study of two customer configurations of the JOBO ST-75 product. As instruments for the study two different calculation methods were used. Results of the calculations were afterwards analyzed in different scenarios. Source data was gathered through interview, own observations and reports. The results of the product calculations show that the target prices exceed the estimated cost of the products for the year 2013. Provided that the budget holds, the company should achieve a positive result for the upcoming year. Both product configurations also show solid contribution margins. With regard to profitability, the alternative completely assembled aggregate is the better option at lower production volumes. At high demand, the do-it-yourself (DIY) kit would be the preferred option, primarily due to much higher production capacity.
