Tiivistelmä
As international purchasing becomes a common practice and markets increasingly competitive, supplier selection – as an important part of purchasing process and supply chain management – evolves to be more complex and attention-catching. Especially, supplier selection assumes a strategic role in determining the success of a start-up company.
Due to its growing importance, supplier selection has gained much attention in research and studies. Many evaluation and selection methods have evolved over the last two decades and the Analytic Hierarchy Process (AHP) as one of the most prominent methods.
This paper was commissioned by the company, Suomen koristetuonti, to find a best suitable supplier in China. The case company is a newly established home decor company based in Espoo, Finland. It intends to import wall stickers from a Chinese supplier to Finland for their more competitive and versatile offerings.
Through online supplier search engine, alibaba.com, and pre-filtering method, the author located 7 possible Chinese suppliers. Their detailed information was then gathered through online questionnaire survey and was analysed via the AHP approach.
In this paper, the author found the most suitable supplier for the case company via consid-erately selected evaluation criteria and successfully implemented AHP analysis. A standard four-step supplier search and selection procedure was developed in the case studies.
The thesis serves as an example of utilizing the AHP approach in evaluating suppliers in China. It was directed in Finnish context which might be of good value for companies that are interested in expanding or shifting their supply source(s) to low-cost countries.
