While there is ample research of all kinds on parents’ preferences for schools, including many specific investigations on the Chilean context, literature on parents’ preferences for non-traditional schools is virtually nonexistent. For this reason, among others, the aim of this study is to explore the reasons why Chilean parents choose non-traditional schools for their children, and the attributes that attract them to these institutions.
The study was done through a qualitative, inductive approach, conducting semi-structured interviews with six participants that have children currently studying in six different non -traditional schools with four different non-traditional educational methods. The interviews were transcribed and then analyzed through conventional content analysis.
The main results show that parents’ preferences for non-traditional education are linked to their search for integral development for their offspring, as they wish for the children to develop several competences and values that are not promoted by traditional education. These preferences are also influenced by the search for teaching methods and styles that respect their children and their diversity of learning rhythms and avoid rigid rules and excessive focus on grades and competition.
These results are thus far only applicable to parents from Santiago, Chile, within the top 20% income wise, as those were the characteristics of the sample of participants. Further studies could use this investigation as a base to create categories that allow them to build statistical instruments and use them on larger scale studies about parents’ preferences for non-traditional education.
