Tiivistelmä
In today’s world, organization can be a service provider as well as a service subcontractor. In both the roles, organizations do have the subcontracting agreements, stating details of the work to be done and related clauses/conditions. Despite the agreements, there have been multiple issues faced by the industry, due to the erroneous or delayed subcontracted work deliveries. It does not matter who was responsible for the issues, the primary company or the subcontractor, the ultimate sufferer is the customer.
The objective of this thesis is to propose guidelines for improving a company vs. subcontractor cooperation based on the selected companies' experience. The current state analysis was conducted using a questionnaire, which was distributed among the selected representatives of the chosen IT companies, as well as interviews conducted with experts. Following the qualitative questionnaire techniques, unstructured interviews and discussions were conducted which provided valuable open-end responses and insightful inputs for the study.
The next step was reviewing the available literature related to best practice of IT subcontractor management, getting ideas from literature to cope up with the weaknesses found in the earlier analysis, and formulating a conceptual framework for guiding the proposal building. Both the current state analysis and the conceptual framework, as well as inputs from the interviews with experts, were used as a foundation for building up the thesis proposal.
The outcome of the thesis was a set of guidelines how to improve the company-subcontractor cooperation in the case companies. Thus, this thesis targeted to resolve a common business problem in the IT industry when dealing with challenges in the situations of a company vs. subcontractor cooperation. Although, the thesis scope is limited to the IT industry and its problems now studied on the example on a limited number of companies, it gives some initial suggestions and directions where to look for possible solutions. Further research can find and touch more challenges and suggest better solutions that were not possibly included into the scope of this thesis.
