C++ 20 Standard in Embedded Systems Development

Abstract

The purpose of this thesis was to rework old firmware for embedded system devices based on the new C++ 20 language standard. The original firmware version was developed based on the C++ 11 language standard in 2013. Additional goals of this thesis were to test the reworked version and to find out advantages and disadvantages compared with the old version. Thus, it was required to make research about the new features, especially modules, of C++ 20 standard and their possible implementation in existing embedded systems. Also, it was required to test the stability and performance of the reworked version. This topic was provided by Comsel System – Finnish company that produces IoT solutions for smart metering. The provided software for rework was a so-called support library which is a part of complex composite firmware. This library was designed to collect data from sensors and send it to the webserver. Further in this thesis work support library will also be called firmware. For development it was required to use tools and libraries accepted by the company, such as CMake and GCC compiler. It was strongly recommended not to use third-party libraries.
