Tiivistelmä
The objective of the study is to propose guidelines for the team leaders of the case company to improve teamwork and to aim for high performance teamwork. Productivity is an important factor in the case company strategy. This study aims to improve the productivity through teamwork performance improvements. Systematically documented guidelines for team leading were not established in the case company before this study.

The research approach for the study is design research with qualitative data gathering methods. The study was carried out in four stages which are the current state analysis, the literature review, the creation of the initial proposal and the validation of the proposal. The current state analysis was conducted to gather strengths and weaknesses of the current team leader practices and documentation. The literature review was focused to tackle the weaknesses found in the current state analysis as well as other best practices for efficient teamwork. The conceptual framework and the draft version of the team leader guidelines were compiled from the relevant literature. In the third stage of the study, the initial proposal of the team leader guidelines was co-created with the stakeholders of the case company. The draft version of the guidelines created in the literature stage was used as a basis in the co-creation workshops and interviews. Finally, the initial proposal was validated with the stakeholders and the final proposal of the guidelines for a team leader was created according to the feedback.

The weaknesses identified during the current state analysis were categorized into six rational themes which were utilized in the other stages. The themes of the final proposal are building a team, teamwork supporting principles, common goal, diversity, communication and common team leader best practices. Team leadership is an entity that consists of several complementary topics and therefore all the themes were addressed in this study.

The outcome of this study, the final proposal, provide a comprehensive set of guidelines for a team leader to improve team efficiency. The final proposal consists of 81 guidelines under the six themes and nineteen topics as a compact set of best practices for a team leader to apply. The performance is proposed to be improved in a sustainable way that simultaneously improves the working environment, staff development and motivation.
