Tiivistelmä
Breast cancer to this day is still the most common cancer among women worldwide. Surgery is the primary form of treatment in breast cancer and surgical treatments have significantly improved breast cancer patient survival.

The purpose of this thesis was to produce an online learning material to support high quality and safe care for breast cancer patients, by increasing the knowledge of health care workers about different types of breast cancer surgeries. This study is a research based development project that utilizes scoping review method to gather information from major databases, medical literature, and other relevant sources. The objectives are to describe different breast cancer surgeries and to support high quality and safe care for breast cancer patients, by increasing health care worker’s knowledge on breast cancer surgeries. This thesis is a part of European wide EBreast-project series, which has already started in 2015. Two major data bases were utilized with the limitation for the last five years and keywords either in abstract/title. Altogether 71 research articles were extracted.

The review supported the theoretical background and portrayed different forms of breast cancer surgery from its history and evolution to current day customs and new innovative techniques. Over the recent years the surgical trend has shifted to a more preserving direction allowing patients to obtain more acceptable breast appearance, without compromising the oncological safety.

The most central issues that rose from the scoping review were the developments of breast conserving surgery and oncoplastic breast conserving surgery. Additionally, the de-escalation of axillary surgery and the increase of the use of fat grafting in reconstructions were also key results of the review. In addition to the main findings the e-learning material highlighted the different surgical forms of breast cancer by using graphs and pictures.

Internet now days has allowed information to be shared across the world and this produced e-learning material is available on an open access platform on the EBreastII projects website. This enables a wide use of the material all over the world and therefore promotes the refinement of care. The e-learning material can be utilized in different healthcare units participating in breast cancer patients care and even as a part of education in teaching future health care professionals.
