Creative leadership is being acknowledged as one of the keys to success in creative industries. The increase in knowledge-based work as well as growing competition underline the importance of creative leadership, which has proved essential in creative industry, globally and locally. Creative industries rely on creative work and innovations. Textbook publishing is part of creative industries, yet research on creative leadership of textbook production is missing.
The objective of this constructive approach thesis was to create guidelines for creative leadership in textbook production. The research question, how to lead ideation of digital textbook, is based on the observation that creative aspect of textbook content creation has not been studied before. Textbook publishing, and development of textbooks, is creative in nature, yet regulated by educational authorities.
The aim of this study is to create guidelines for those, who lead textbook ideation either in concept creation or content creation phase of textbook. Theoretical framework for this thesis comes from contextual theories of creative leadership and concept analysis of textbooks, based on a three-level media concept model. The essential concepts in this study are contextual theories of creative leadership, media concept model and textbook concept analysis as well as development framework of Design thinking and Design sprint pilot workshop.
Design thinking approach inspired a digital textbook Design sprint pilot workshop. Observations at Design sprints, and facilitation of one Design sprint, form empirical part of this study.
Analysis of both observations and feedback from sprints, as well as feedback from colleagues of the constructed guidelines for creative leadership of textbooks, resulted in deeper understanding of the strong relation between concept levels of textbook and creative leadership.
