IoT and Circular Economy on the Edge

This thesis explored technologies that support Circular Economy (CE), and which Internet of Things (IoT) has a remarkable role from the European point of view. Wireless technologies, which are characteristics for the IoT were observed from the perspective, that computing is moving from the cloud to the edge of the cloud. The goal of this study was to clarify if these technologies are matured enough to be utilized in CE.
The first phase of the work included earlier made systematic literature review, and two different technology maturity review analysis. Based on those results four different technologies were selected for in-depth review. Selected technologies were smart buildings, blockchain, product service systems and artificial intelligence.
These four technologies that support circular economy were observed from their known predictions and special characteristics technology point of view.
Computing power transform from cloud to the edge of the cloud required IoT architecture investigation. This was done from the wireless technology point of view.
The result outlined a view that technologies supporting the transition towards circular economy exists and are matured. Also noted that MQ Transport Protocol (MQTT) is the most energy efficient protocol and computing transform from cloud to the edge creates new jobs and innovation, but utilizing these technologies still need some special knowledge.
