The thesis aims to research the evaluation of digital accessibility for online businesses and the benefits and challenges of doing so.
The thesis studies the background of the Web Content Accessibility Directive that focused on creating a common digital accessibility legal framework for all public online services across the EU.
It further investigates the European Accessibility Act which will come into place in 2025. The European Accessibility Act will require private businesses to become compliant with the EU´s digital accessibility regulation.
In achieving this goal, the thesis dives into the history, challenges, and reasons for digital accessibility. It Investigates the business possibilities of implementing it and strives to identify the positive and negative aspects it might present for companies offering their services online.
A digital accessibility business case was executed in cooperation with Pihla Oy in Finland to support this research. The goal was to analyse the current accessibility state of Pihla's desktop and mobile services as well as identify the main challenges and issues. This research involved various test groups, such as the visually impaired and the elderly.
Automatic test tools, test surveys, interviews as well and interview with leading accessibility expert, focused about accessibility, support the business case by producing additional research data.
The thesis concludes by outlining an accessibility implementation roadmap and next steps for Pihla to continue on the accessibility journey.
