Thermal engines are the core of aviation nowadays, they use petroleum-based fuels to create power and energy necessary. It is important to explore the types and layouts of thermal engines and engineering behind them. Moreover, exploring the history and the applications of those engine layouts is important as well.
Simultaneously there is a science behind the petroleum and the creation of its derivatives. The topic of the thesis is to describe the history of petroleum and its importance for some past civilizations. It explains the types of pe-troleum and the ways in which they exist in nature, the chemical composition, and physical forms of petroleum. Fuels and other derivatives are extracted from petroleum using many methods such as distillation and cracking, to produce the best suitable products for human usage.
Using petroleum as a source of energy comes with drawbacks, such as pollution and limited amounts of this fossil resource. Luckily, humans have understood those issues and created new technologies and applied them to some industries either to replace fossil fuels fully or partially.
Unfortunately for aviation it is one of the industries still fully dependent on oil. Nothing or very little has been done to change that. In the thesis, the options available were explored. It was also studied the feasibility and implementation possibilities in a certain timeframe due to the decline in oil reserves.
