Tiivistelmä
In the June 2021 Employee Engagement survey, results showed a decreased sense of belonging at Electronic Arts Finland Oy (EA Finland). The objective of the thesis was to understand why the sense of belonging had decreased, what contributes and what disrupts the sense of belonging at EA Finland and to create an action plan on how the sense of belonging can be improved at EA Finland.
The theoretical framework on sense of belonging was researched from viewpoints of the need to belong, identity and belonging, belonging and location, rejection and what research suggests about improving sense of belonging at work.
The research was conducted as a qualitative research, single case study to deepen the understanding around experiences, feelings and memories of employees surrounding belonging. The data was gathered through 10 recorded Zoom interviews and a qualitative survey during November-December 2021. The results were presented to the commissioning organization in May 2022 and the results will be implemented in development projects in the organization going forward.
The research objectives were reached, since the results concluded that by increasing face-to-face interactions, improving interpersonal relationships, communicating with more transparency, clarity, and better timing, having less uncertainty about the changes in the organization, having common goals, feeling valued, having meaningful work, understanding that not everyone’s sense of belonging has changed and keeping up the good work in the onboarding process will improve the sense of belonging at EA Finland. Practical actions were suggested for each research finding.
Further research is suggested to be conducted as follow-up research to investigate progress on the sense of belonging and potential further effects of the pandemic on the workforce at EA Finland.
