This product-based thesis studies the different cost factors that must be considered in an international expansion and aims to create tools that allow the calculation of these costs. A competitive landscape analysis is also carried out for the capital cities of selected Nordic countries. The thesis is created to give the commissioning company a toolkit that will allow them to create assessments and calculations about the profitability of an international expansion.
The study was carried out by first creating a theory base for the toolkits and competitive landscape analysis. The aspects analysed in the theory base include the importance of financial planning, different cost categories, and competitive landscape & pricing. The tools and competitive landscape analysis were then done by following the findings found in the theory base.
Two tools were created during this study. Both tools were created on Microsoft Excel. The first tool allows the calculation of the costs that arise from expanding the business opera-tions to a foreign country. The second tool is created for the calculation of the costs that arise from the running of operations abroad. This operating cost calculator also has features that allow the forecasting of costs, sales, and selected profitability ratios. The competitive landscape analysis on the other hand gives the commissioning company an idea of the best potential market for expansion based on competitiveness.
The toolkits created in this study can be used in combination with the gathered data from the competitive landscape analysis to create a comprehensive assessment on what market would be the best for international expansion. No costs were calculated in this study. The thesis benefits the commissioning company by giving them the tools and necessary data to create these assessments and calculations.
