The advantage of printed electronics is that it can be used in various ways across different business sectors to create new products or improve existing ones. Introduction of new technology can be challenging, but it also brings opportunity to expand business beyond customary limits. For companies which already produce graphical printing products for advertising purposes, this type of transition toward functional printing could be profitable business. Especially for lighted advertising, as presented in this thesis, the use of printed electronics could bring new product designs.
Even if printed electronics could be used several ways in advertising industry, in this thesis the focus lies mainly on how OLED technology could be used with advertising products. The possible use of OLED devices in typical advertising applications and the challenges for implementing this technology were described. To compare this technology with existing illuminated advertising applications, in this thesis also other lighting applications that could be fabricated with printed electronics technology were introduced. In addition to the use of OLEDs in advertising, the general working principle of OLEDs and the typical fabrication methods were examined.
To lower the level of implementing this technology into advertising, a theory for low threshold application is created. In this theory a simple OLED structure, the materials that could be used and manufacturing method for this particular device are described. The theory of low threshold application is based on literature and several studies conducted on this topic. The purpose of this theory is to demonstrate that despite the complexity of OLED technology, functional applications could be fabricated by using OUAS PrinLab equipment, Dimatix DMP-2850 printer and nScrypt dispenser. Possibilities of further development and alternative structures of low threshold device are described in this work. The current price range (2022) and the consumption of the materials for the low threshold application are also taken into account in this thesis.
As an example of advertising application in which OLEDs could be used as a light source, a LED powered advertising sign is fabricated for this thesis. Together with low threshold OLED device, this sign illustrates the simple advertising application, which could be the first step to implement this technology into advertising.
