Media education is an important part of growing up and learning in early childhood education. In 2018, a new early childhood education plan was submitted which added different forms of media education as part of the early childhood education program.
In this thesis, the term media education, the history of media and media education, as well as research about the effects of media on children and families with children were explained. The thesis was commissioned by the city of Kuopio education services – early childhood education division. An electronic survey was conducted among family day care nurses, group family day care nurses and family day care instructors in the city of Kuopio. The survey was conducted in the late winter of 2019, and the results of the survey were reviewed together with family day care instructors, Early Childhood Education Planner and Childhood Services Manager of the city of Kuopio at the beginning of 2020.
The objective of the thesis was to produce information about the media education skills of family day care workers and how family day care workers carry out media education in their work. The survey provided indicative answers to how family day care workers and instructors hope to receive support and guidance on how to carry out media education in their own work. The survey revealed that the majority of family day care workers, group family day care workers and family day care instructors carry out media education in their work. Based on the results of the survey, most workers and instructors knew and used different tools and working methods in carrying out media education. Among
the respondents to the survey, it became clear that media education was considered important, especially in the future, but more support and guidance were still needed for implementing media education. The research of the thesis can be used as a basis for further research on media education in early childhood education in Kuopio.
