Tiivistelmä
The selection of appropriate dressing is an essential component of surgical wound management. The ideal dressing for the wound should provide an environment that is optimal for wound healing. Postoperative wounds heal by primary intent, and the objective of healthcare professionals is to enhance the wound healing environment while minimising the risk of complications such as surgical site infections (SSIs) and skin blistering.
The study compiled evidence-based information regarding the impact of wound dressings on the healing process of a surgical wound. The aim was to clarify the effects of surgical wound dressing on the wound healing process and enhance the knowledge of surgical wound dressing and the wound healing process among nurses. The literature review method was used to implement the thesis, while content analysis was used to analyse the data. The Cinahl Complete, Pubmed, and ScienceDirect databases were used to retrieve 11 articles (N = 11). Savonia University of Applied Sciences is a collaborator on this thesis.
The results of the study showed that the wound dressing can have different effects on the healing process of a surgical wound. The main effects of wound dressing can be grouped into three main categories, namely, reduced risks of postoperative complications, supporting of wound healing processes and other contributing factors. Some studies have shown that nurses' knowledge on selection of wound dressings is crucial, training in using new methods is recommended and using up to date information while choosing wound dressing is important.
The results of this study could benefit the nurses and nursing students in perioperative studies and as a reference during nursing practice. Further research is needed focusing specifically on the selection and properties of surgical wound dressings available in Finland.
