Tiivistelmä
The world of competitive gaming has grown exponentially in recent years, in Finland and internationally. As the restrictions of COVID-19 have slowly lifted, Espoo is hosting an esports tournament “Elisa Masters Espoo 2022” from 17 to 20 of November 2022. It is an international level esports event consisting of world class teams and matches in the game: Counter-Strike: Global Offensive. For Espoo the event is the first major entry and investment in the global CS:GO tournament calendar.
The aim of the thesis was to study the visitors of the event and answer the following questions like, what type of visitors the event had, and what is the tournament visitor profile for this event. Other questions, beneficial to Espoo, would be, what benefits could identifying the economic, cultural, and social aspects of visitors bring in value to Espoo or make Espoo more attractive as a city. In addition, it was studied which of the findings could benefit Espoo in the future events.
As this is the second large arena event in Finland, this was also the first time the visitors were properly surveyed to gain knowledge of their behavior. This subject was chosen by the author for personal, but value bringing and public interest reasons as well.
After researching and defining the profile of the visitor in the event, it can be shown that as a successful event, it was beneficial to the city’s economy and most visitors appreciated the location and arrangements of the event. It also had positive social and cultural effects and helped many stakeholders in the esports ecosystem. As this was the first time an esports arena event was hosted by a city in Finland, the visitor sur-vey needs to be repeated in the next event to see if the data is consistent. Espoo could now establish a leading position as an event organizer amongst Finnish cities with regular esports events.
