The purpose of this study is to investigate how art therapy as a method can help children to grieve and the importance therapists have in the meeting with such children. The research has been based on a qualitative research methodology and a semi-structured interview guide has been used.
Previous research shows that the art therapeutic method is most effective when the person concerned lacks the ability to identify and verbally express his/her feelings. Art therapy has also proven invaluable for women with breast cancer and children with ADHD diagnosis, where the method has helped those affected to find new strategies that will help them in the healing process.
The results of this study show that there are differences between how therapists say they are working and how the literature in the field advocate that art therapy as a method should be modeled after. What emerged from the interviews is that the therapeutic role dominates and overshadows the artistic portrayal. According to the therapists art therapy is healing children from their grief, but this was defined a little differently by the therapists. The therapists clearly highlight the need to be a secure adult with experience of crises in order to be able to face children who are in the process of tackling their grief.
